Walter Matina

I am an AW Mellon PhD Scholar jointly based in Anthropology and The Center for Indian Studies in Africa at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. My PhD topic sits comfortably within an anthropology of migration and that of violence. It focuses on trying to understand the way in which some service delivery protests end up as xenophobic looting of migrant owned shops and properties. My research interests, apart from those already mentioned, span from identity politics and politics of belonging to history and memory and middle class migrant socialities both in South Africa and in Zimbabwe.
